An aquarium is made up of tanks, fish and water. The Leghorn aquarium is also
made up of a city and its moods. This is a feature that sets it apart from
the other aquariums on the Peninsula.
Because Leghorn is not a city on the sea but a city of the sea, where the sea
is more than just nature, recreation, tourism, work and employment: it is also
an extension of all of the city's senses. And the Aquarium is one of these senses.
Named after the great naturalist Diacinto Cestoni, it was inaugurated in 1937
and completely renovated in 2003/2004.
The City Administration seeks a business partner to manage it, who is capable
of turning it into a productive business and major attraction for national and
international tourism.
The Aquarium faces the seaside in a lovely spot, strategically located within
the sea port area, the city's new center of development.
Since 1968 the Aquarium has housed one of Europe's most important staffs of
marine biologists: the Inter-university Center of Marine Biology (CIBM), established
by the City of Leghorn and the Universities of Bologna, Florence, Modena, Siena,
Pisa and Turin.
The CIBM conducts its own scientific activities on the reproductive aspects
of various species, on fishing, and the protection and management of marine
reserves and the marine environment
